Academic Cooperation Between
UMCP & Thai Universities
On 25 April 2001, President Mote visited Thailand to have a meeting with the alumnus and develop new opportunities of academic cooperation with Thai institutes.

In the morning, President Mote and his team, Professor Chuan Sheng Liu, Professor of Physics and Director of the Institute for Global Chinese Affairs, Mr.Mark Furuyama, Development Officer for the Office of International Affairs and Mr.Saul Sosnowski, Director of International Programs and of the Latin American Studies Center, Professor, Department of Spanish and Portuguese, University of Maryland paid a courtesy call on His Excellency Mr. Sutham Saengprathum at Ministry of University Affairs to discuss and exchange academic experiences. After that President Mote gave a lecture on the topic of “University Government, Industry Partnership: Lighting the Pathway to the Future.” Participants were deans and high-ranking academic representatives from national government and private universities.

In the evening, University of Maryland Alumni Club (Thailand Chapter) signed Memorandum of Understanding with University of Maryland. The MOU mainly aimed to encourage cooperation in education and research laboratories. The cooperation enhances the benefits of the alumni as a whole and serve the Club’s role in develop human resources in facilitating study in tertiary level.

                     The relationship does not only exist between the University of Maryland and its
Thai  alumni  but  also  with  Thai  universities. Educational  collaboration  has been firmly
established  with  Chulalongkorn  University  for  the   past  recent  years,  and more such
programs  are  on  the way.  In 1997, Professor  William Destler, Dean  of  the  Faculty  of
Engineering,  and  Professor  Nariman  Farvadin, Head of  the  Department  of  Electrical

Engineering  from  the University 
of Maryland, were   invited   as 
speakers in the  twentieth confe-
rence  on electrical  engineering
( EECON - 20) organized  by the
Department of Electrical Enginee-
ring, Faculty  of   Engineering,
Chulalongkorn University.
The conference  is regarded  as an interna tional    forum  to   provide opportunities
for researchers and electrical engineers  in Thailand  and overseas  to  present their  works,
and exchange ideas and experience in research and development.

          In 1998, Chulalongkorn University  
welcomed   Professor   Dr.Ernest  J. Wilson 
of  the  University of Maryland  to give a
special lecture on the US telecommunica
tions and  commerce policy on the
Development  of  Global Information.
In September of 1998, Chulalongkorn University and the University of Maryland  jointly
organized a seminar on a cooperative Ph.D.program to exchange views on academic issues,
educational administration and research.This cooperative effort assists in allowing Thai Ph.D.
students to study and conduct research at leading international  institutions  like  the  
University of Maryland.
                            Later in August 1998, a team of delegates  from the Electrical   Engineering
Department of Chulalongkorn University visited the University of Maryland and met Professor
William Destler, Dean of A. James Clark School of Engineering, and Professor Nariman
Farvadin, Chairman of Department of Electrical Engineering. The mission of this visit was to
establish an international   Ph.D program in collaboration with the University of Maryland.

Seminar on cooperative Ph.D. program
in electrical engineering between
Chulalongkorn University and University of Maryland
     Between the 28th and 29th of September of 1998, the Department of Electrical Engineering
of Chulalongkorn University and the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering   of
University of Maryland organized a seminar on cooperative Ph.D. program to exchange their
views on academic issues, educational administration, and research. Three faculty members
from Maryland participated in this seminar : Prof. Nariman Farvardin (Chair of the Department of
Electrical & Computer Engineering), Prof. John Melngailis, and Prof. Eyad H. Abed. Associate
Prof. Dr. Pichanee  Bodharamik, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, was the
chair of the seminar.
                 This seminar was organized to establish  
relationship and cooperation between the two
departments to partially support the Ph.D. program
in electrical engineering at Chulalongkorn
University. This cooperative effort assists the
production of domestic Ph.D. students by allowing
Ph.D. students to study and conduct research
at leading international academic institution for a
period of time. Furthermore, this cooperation strengthens academic relationships between
Chulalongkorn University and leading academic institution abroad.

     On this occasion, Thailand    Alumni   Club, in

cooperation with  Chulalongkorn  University,
organized a special academic lecture on  "The
International  Face of the American Research
University" given by  President Clayton Daniel 
Mote, which received  high interest from the
attendants, who were lecturers,students, alumni
and academics.Thereafter,President Mote and  his
team met  Professor Dr.Thienchai Kiranandana, by the signing of the Engineering, University
memorandum of agreement between A. James Clark President of  Chulalongkorn University,
to discuss and exchange academic experiences, followed School of  Maryland, and   the
Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University to encourage cooperation between the two
institutes in research development and academic exchange.
